The bad guys mutter and hum while on sentry duty, and come running and dodging when the bullet ballet starts. When talk is useless and weapons carry the conversation, there is a mix to be had, from the ubiquitous pistols and shotguns to flamethrowers, throwing knives, and mini-crossbows. Some NPCs initiate cut-scenes, in which they impart important information. Some will say just a line or two while others have entire black-market scams and try to sell you useful items. The UNATCO soldier, the undercover contact disguised as a bum, the poor, hungry kid - all have different degrees of interaction with Denton. Buildings and areas of conflict are not always linear and often offer multiple entry points.Various personalities dot the landscape. Books and newspapers picked up during exploration provide interesting, moody background, as well as an occasional clue. ![]() Each set location is highly interactive with door locks to be picked, security cameras to bypass, and computer terminals for hints and codes. Denton, a cybernetically augmented agent of the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) who is up against National Secessionist Forces (NSF), re-packaged Triads, and the shadowy underground known as Silhouette. The maps are large and require time to explore, with the first arena being a blown-up Statue of Liberty. Trying to keep order and make some sense of the situation is J.C. There is no multi-player mode in the game - it's just you against the computer.Disease ravages the population while the struggle for the much-in demand antidote "Ambrosia" rages on. Gameplay is similar to that of Thief, with stealth being at least as important as racking up a high body count. AND.Deus Ex is a first-person shooter set in a dark, grim, near future. This was the most fun for me, and so i didn't see a role at all for nonlethals. I could silently kill up close w/ the 10mm or pick off snipers w/ the crossbow without detection, but if i got in trouble or just saw strength as a simple solution i went loud as hell. I ignored all shooting augs and got mostly hacking and any augs that would give me a new route to take (gas immunity, icarus landing system, picking up heavy stuff, etc.) So i used old fashioned smarts and stealth as well as hacking and side routes. My playstyle used all the stealth skills i've learned from splinter cell and the like WITHOUT most of the stealth upgrades and invisibility. Not using the badass (and well designed, imo) weapons would make me miss out on all those cool moments i had. I really don't like the nonlethal weapons. When i found the laser i was stoked because it looked like it would be really powerful but i was completely underwhelmed when i used it. I remember nailing an armored guard's head to a wall and watching him hang from the bolt, a morbidly awesome little detail. And it was a nice touch how the enemies dont die instantly when you crossbow them they kind of writhe on the ground in pain for a few seconds. I passed on the sniper and went for the crossbow, and picking off enemy snipers from long distances using the lead targeting assist upgrade was really satisfying. Doesn't one shot everything unupgraded, but it sounds like it packs a punch and i like the reload animation. I remember getting a shotgun by hacking into a police officer's computer and finding out what room it was stored in, so it felt really special to get a weapon that powerful in what seemed like an early part of the game. ![]() The animation when he pulls it out is badass, too reminds me of the halo 1 pistol. ![]() Just go sam fisher style (conviction-era, mostly) and pop heads when you need to. Then its the perfect weapon for any warehouse/office/enemy base with tons of guards. The 10 mm pistol seemed really lame.until you upgrade it fully. ![]() I completely ignored the combat rifle and machine pistol, i've used enough of those in other fpses. I got the revolver at the start of the game and loved it, such a badass weapon, especially when you upgrade the rounds to EXPLODING BULLETS! I had that holstered whenever i was walking around the cities in case some thugs tried to threaten me.
